When I was 27 years old, I had just been appointed General Manager of a manufacturing plant.
This was my first management position in operating an entire factory on my own.
Things were going great for my first 3 months until I had to fire somebody for continuing coming in late.
After the firing , the entire building protested, by walking out on me.This was because most everyone was related to the person whom I just terminated.
I was stunned , shaken and emotionally overwhelmed. All I could think of was, I’m done, I’m finished, I’m about to get fired!
I wanted to wrap myself up in a fetal position and bury myself beneath my desk.
I now had to replace 20 staff over a weekend as this happened on a late Friday afternoon.
It also happened to be the same weekend as my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary and I was the MC.
I called Head Office and gave them the story. Their reply was,”fix it.”
Over the weekend, in and around the anniversary celebrations, I managed to round up a skeleton crew of just enough people to open the doors on Monday.
By midweek we had most positions filled and we were back in business.
I don’t wish this situation on anybody but I learned a lot from this gut -wrenching experience.
For one thing I was micro-managing everybody and preventing the other plant managers and assistants in doing their jobs such as, disciplining employees who are repeatedly late for work.
After that tumultuous start, I dove into reading books, watching videos, listening to CD’s, and taking in seminars to learn about people and how to handle, indifferent, tough and even troublesome employees.
A year later after this early initiation , I entered the world of sales and sales management, and over the course of time, rising to the level of Sales Manager, General Manager and Publisher and CEO of two major newspaper chains; managing staff of 150-250 people and achieving revenues from $15-$70 million/year.
I have since taken my 35 years of CEO/Sales Management and Training experiences and implemented them into my new Coaching Business practice which I am ready to share with you.
These powerful People Skill Sets(PSS), also deal with staffing issues, customer challenges and are even applicable for personal family situations.
There used to be 3 main reasons why people quit their jobs:
- Bad boss.

- Too much micromanagement from the top.
- Personal self-reflection and self-questioning on what is “my purpose.”
So no matter where you are in life, the one common ingredient to all success and contentment is the ability to deal with other people.
